It sounds like a simple question, but for many people across the African diaspora, the answer carries layers of history, identity, culture, and belonging. Where we were born may be part of our story, but it isn't always the whole story.

So, What Is the African Diaspora?

The African diaspora refers to people of African descent living throughout the world, connected by ancestry but shaped by many different countries, cultures, languages, and experiences.

That means being part of the diaspora doesn't look or sound just one way. An African American in Philadelphia, a Ghanaian American, a Kenyan living in London, or a Caribbean family in Toronto may have very different stories yet each can carry a connection to Africa in their own way.

Identity Can Have Layers

For many of us, identity isn't a choice between one place or another. We can be American and connected to African ancestry. We can be Ghanaian and American. Kenyan and British. Caribbean and African. One part of our identity doesn't have to erase another.

Understanding those layers gives us room to learn from one another instead of assuming that everyone's connection to Africa or to the diaspora looks the same.
