International Travel Insurance: What Nobody Tells You Until You Need It

You booked the flight, picked the hotel, planned the excursions, and probably already know what you're packing.

But there's one thing many travelers don't think about until something goes wrong.

Travel insurance.

For many people, travel insurance means one thing: If my trip gets canceled, can I get my money back?

That's a fair question. But when you're traveling internationally, there's another question worth asking.

What happens if I get sick or injured once I'm there?

Because Things Happen! 😅

You know that street food everybody told you that you absolutely had to try?

You tried it.

It was delicious.

And now your stomach has some thoughts. 😂

Or maybe you booked that adventure excursion because you're on vacation and decided, Why not?

Hopefully, everything goes perfectly. But illnesses and injuries don't check your itinerary before showing up.

Your Health Insurance May Not Travel With You 🌍

One mistake travelers sometimes make is assuming their regular health insurance works the same way outside the United States.

It may not.

Depending on your policy, international medical expenses could be limited or excluded altogether.

And here's something else worth knowing: Medicare generally doesn't cover healthcare outside the United States, except in limited circumstances.

That's why understanding your coverage before leaving home is so important.

Not All Travel Insurance Is the Same

Here's where things can get confusing.

Trip Cancellation & Interruption Coverage

May reimburse eligible prepaid, nonrefundable expenses when a covered event forces you to cancel or interrupt your trip.

Travel Medical Insurance

Can help cover eligible emergency medical treatment if you become sick or injured while traveling abroad.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

May cover medically necessary transportation to an appropriate medical facility when the policy requirements are met.

And here's something many travelers don't realize.

You can purchase standalone international travel medical insurance.

You don't necessarily need to purchase an entire trip cancellation package just to obtain medical protection abroad.

However, policies differ. Coverage limits, exclusions, preexisting medical conditions, and adventure activities are all things worth reviewing.

Kenya International Travel Insurance Requirements: What U.S. Visitors Should Know

Effective October 5, 2026, Kenya requires eligible international visitors, including travelers from the United States, to obtain mandatory inbound travel health insurance.

And here's where it gets interesting.

Already purchased travel insurance in America? You still need Kenya's required policy unless you qualify for an exemption.

The mandatory coverage costs up to $44 per person and is separate from the electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA).

Kenya's policy provides specified medical benefits, including emergency treatment and medical evacuation. However, it doesn't replace comprehensive travel protection.

For example, you may still want coverage for trip cancellations, lost luggage, travel interruptions, or medical expenses beyond the mandatory policy's limits.

So yes, you may need two policies, but they serve different purposes.

The good news? You can review the requirements and purchase the mandatory coverage through Kenya's official government portals.

Sammie's Travel Tip: Before traveling internationally, check your destination's entry requirements AND your insurance coverage. Having insurance doesn't automatically mean you have the right coverage.

Information current as of October 23, 2026. Entry requirements, premiums, exemptions, and policy terms are subject to change.

Before You Board That Plane ✈️

Take a few minutes to ask yourself:

  • Does my health insurance cover me internationally?

  • What happens if I need emergency medical treatment?

  • Does my policy include medical evacuation?

  • Are my planned excursions covered?

  • Who do I contact if something happens while I'm abroad?

These aren't necessarily the most exciting parts of planning a vacation.

But they're certainly worth considering.
